John D. Rockefeller library at Colonial Williamsburg

In June 2009 Chip took Charlotte and me to Virginia for about a week. There was a three-day meeting of the descendants of Hood’s Texas Brigade reunion. Our forefather was my Great-great-grandfather Major William Purnell Townsend of the 4th Texas in the War Between the States. In Colonial Williamsburg, I spent two days doing research in the Rockefeller library.

I located much information on the Field

family that came to Jamestown in 1635 and later their decedents were members of the Virginia House of Burgesses. I also spent time in the library of the State of Virginia in Richmond doing more research. One day we went to the Gaines Mill Battlefield where the Hood’s Brigade group paid tribute to the Major. This was the battle where Major Townsend led the fourth Texas on a successful rout of the Union Troops.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Charlotte and Chip took advantage of the time I was in the Libraries to sightsee through the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge parkway. They also visited the Arboretum in Richmond. One day we went to Norfolk and also the Yorktown battlefield. It was a great and rewarding trip that we all enjoyed.
